| Metropolitan Chicago's current regional land-use plan is
the NIPC 2040 Regional Framework Plan, published in 2005. That same
year, the Chicago Metropolitan
Agency for Planning (CMAP) was created to integrate planning of land use
and transportation in the seven counties of northeastern Illinois.
CMAP is developing the region's first truly comprehensive plan for land use
and transportation, to be published in 2010.
Honored as the American Planning Association's 2006 national plan of the year,
NIPC's 2040 Regional Framework Plan defined specific strategies to guide future
growth in northeastern Illinois. The plan provided a vision for meeting land-use
challenges in the most efficient, coordinated and sustainable manner.
In 2007 the CMAP Board formally adopted the framework plan.
