NIPC's executive director and
staff are governed by thirty-four Commissioners
who are appointed severally by the Governor of Illinois, the six county boards, a
quadrennial assembly of suburban mayors, the mayor of Chicago, and special-purpose
governments or associations of governments responsible for regional transportation,
wastewater management, and parks and recreation. Twenty-three of the Commissioners are
elected local officials.
The full Commission meets quarterly, on the third Thursday in December
and during the fifth week in March, June, and September. Much of the Commission's work is done by standing and special committees,
which usually meet monthly. Commission and committee
