Census 2000: Summary File 3 (Sample Data) Profiles
(March 19, 2004)

Following the 2000 Census, the U.S. Census Bureau released computer files containing detailed tabulations of the questions asked of a sampling of census respondents (those who received the sample or long-form questionnaire). This includes information about income, poverty, education, employment, travel to work, ancestry, language spoken at home, housing conditions, etc. for all geographic areas in the state down to the block group.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THESE DATA ARE BASED ON A SAMPLE OF THE POPULATION AND HOUSING UNITS THROUGHOUT THE STATE. THUS THE RESULTS ARE SUBJECT TO SAMPLING ERRORS AND MAY DIFFER FROM THE 100-PERCENT COUNTS FOR THESE AREAS.

NIPC and CAGIS (Chicago Area Geographic Information Study), in partnership with the Illinois State Data Center have produced a series of subject profiles from these census files for such standard geographic units in Illinois as state, county, political township, and municipality. We have then bundled these individual subject profiles together into a comprehensive 60-page demographic profile for each county, township, and municipality in Northeastern Illinois.

The sections found within each comprehensive profile are as follows:

  •       Primary Profile provides a general overview of each geographic area’s population showing the most commonly requested general distributions and limited cross-tabulations of all general population topics covered in this dataset.

  •       Secondary Profile contains frequently, but less commonly, requested information about the residents of each area.

  •       Housing Profile provides a general overview of each geographic area’s housing showing the most commonly requested information about the general housing topics covered in Census 2000.

  •       Income Profile contains household income distributions by race and age of the householder, information about sources of income, earnings by age and sex, and related data.

  •       Employment Profile contains the number of people working, looking for work, unemployment rate, the industries and occupations of people at work broken down by sex.

  •       Education Profile contains information about educational attainment and school enrollment.

  •       Poverty Profile contains information about poverty status by family structure, employment history, age, race and Hispanic/Latino origin, sex, and selected sources of income.

  •       Disability Profile contains information on general types of disabilities by age, race, Hispanic origin, sex, employment status and educational attainment.

  •       Household and Family Profile contains information on marital status, household structure and family types.

  •       Language Profile contains information about language spoken at home, linguistic isolation, and place of birth and citizenship status for the foreign-born population.

  •       Ancestry Profile contains detailed information about ancestry and the foreign-born population’s places of birth.

  •       Migration Profile contains information about residence in 1995, place of birth, year of entry into the United States, and citizenship status.
