FOUR SUBURBAN OFFICIALS ELECTED TO NIPC BOARD

Elected officials from Buffalo Grove, Elgin, Lake in the Hills, and Schaumburg have been chosen to serve as members of the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission.

Meeting in Algonquin on May 29, the Assembly of Mayors and Village Presidents elected the four to represent suburban city and village governments on the regional planning agency. The four are:

  • Kevin Kelly, Mayor, City of Elgin, representing Kane County
  • Al Larson, Mayor, Village of Schaumburg, representing north Cook County
  • Sidney Mathias, President, Village of Buffalo Grove, representing Lake County
  • Joseph Murawski, Trustee, Village of Lake in the Hills, representing McHenry County

The selection of the new Commissioners was made necessary by the recent municipal elections, in which four municipal representatives on NIPC either chose not to run for reelection or were defeated. The four new Commissioners fill out remaining two-year terms ending in the spring of 1999.

The new Commissioners join four other municipal officials previously selected by the Assembly to serve on the NIPC board:

  • Alan Bennett, Trustee, Village of Elmwood Park, representing west Cook County
  • Kyle Hastings, President, Village of Orland Hills, representing south Cook County
  • Rae Rupp Srch, President, Village of Villa Park, representing DuPage County
  • Anthony Uremovic, Councilman, City of Joliet, representing Will County

The Assembly of Mayors and Village Presidents is provided for in the Commission's state enabling legislation. The Assembly elects eight Commissioners, three representing sectors of Cook County and one representing each of the five other counties in the metropolitan area. Representatives are also appointed to the 34-member Commission by the Mayor of Chicago, the six county boards, RTA, CTA, Metra, Pace, the Chicago Park District, suburban park districts, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, suburban sanitary districts, and the Governor of Illinois.

The Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission is the comprehensive planning agency for the six-county metropolitan area. In addition to planning, the agency provides technical and research assistance and reviews state and federal grant requests for local governments.
