Learning About Metadata

Sign up for the latest Metadata Workshop

Metadata - or documentation - is the cornerstone of a successful inventory of available geographic information system (GIS) data. Metadata describes the who, what, when, where, and why about a GIS data set.

The metadata style we have adopted is called the "Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM), Version 2 (FGDC-STD-001-1998)" and is supported nationally and internationally.

Once created, these metadata records are posted to a clearinghouse. Clearinghouses are collections of documents that describe data sets and they allow the user to search and browse for data.

Unique features about the clearinghouse system are:

  •  all participating clearinghouses are accessible through one gateway;
  •  you may expand your search to include time and geographic extent of interest;
  •  you may download data or find instructions for obtaining data.

METADATA TRAINING MATERIALS

Contributing to the metadata collection is easy once you know how. There are prescribed formats for submitting GIS data descriptions. Click here to see some of the materials used during NIPC's metadata training workshops - workshops that train you how to write metadata. Please take a look at these materials. If you are interested in taking a metadata workshop, please contact Mike Hoather for more details at mhoather@nipc.org or call (312) 454-0400 X614.
