Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission presents:
Getting to Know METADATA

A free, day-long, hands-on workshop that will help you to document your geospatial data correctly the first time!

Presenter:
Nina L. Savar, GIS Manager, Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission
10th September 2003, Lake County GIS Training Laboratory, Waukegan, Illinois

Do you recognize the need to document your data, but fear you'll get bogged down by the federal metadata standard?

Are you overwhelmed by the prospect of documenting the vast amounts of data that have been piling up for years?

Do you have spatial data you want to publicize, but don't know how or where?

Then come to this free, hands-on workshop!

  • Learn to search for and read metadata efficiently

  • Learn how to write metadata using a Astandard@ format

  • Learn how to use metadata compilation software

In one day, learn the uses of and the reasons for writing and maintaining metadata for your organization. Learn methods to make the task of writing metadata painless. Learn how to share your information with the wider community and publicize your holdings internationally.

Topics Include: Review of the structure and components of FGDC CSDGM-compliant metadata; Introduction to metadata collection tool; Minimally compliant versus fully compliant metadata; Finding metadata resources on the Internet.

Bring yourself and one other person from your organization: In this case, two heads are better than one! Participants will be contacted prior to the workshop to draft a minimally-compliant metadata set from which to learn the FGDC standard. After the workshop, participants will complete their metadata and post it to the federal metadata clearinghouse.

When:      Wednesday, 10 September 2003, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Where:     Lake County GIS Training Laboratory, 18 N. County Street, Waukegan, IL

RSVP:       Because of limited seating and the necessity of a pre-workshop interview with each participant, please call Mike Hoather, Metadata Specialist, NIPC, 312-454-0400, ext.614 or email mhoather@nipc.org
