2000 Census:  County-To-County Worker Flows

This information is compiled from Census 2000 responses to the long-form (sample) questions on where people worked. Data are available by county for residents of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.  Here, of course, the emphasis is on the six counties that comprise NIPC's service area in northeastern Illinois.

The summary table below presents information on how many workers lived in a particular county, where they went to work, and (as a result of their commutes) how many persons ended up working in each county during the 2000 Census reference week.  For instance, the census counted a total of 469,373 workers living in DuPage County, 277,934 of which worked in their home county, with another 152,433 commuting to work in Cook County.  Altogether, 534,551 persons were working in DuPage County, meaning that in addition to its homegrown work force, it was importing 256,617 other workers into the county, or 48% of its total.

Overall, Will County had the most nomadic resident workers among the six northeastern Illinois counties.  More than 134,000 workers living in the county, or 55.6% of the total number of resident workers, commuted outside the county to work, principally to the more job-rich counties of Cook and DuPage.

A total of 3,725,982 workers lived in the six counties of northeastern Illinois, with all but 68,230 (or 1.8%) working in the same six counties.  On the other hand, 189,909 workers living outside the six-county area commuted into the area to work, accounting for 4.9% of all 3,847,661 persons at work in northeastern Illinois during the census reference week.

According to the 2000 Census, 65.9% of the workers living in northeastern Illinois (2.46 million out of 3.73 million) worked in Cook County.  This was a drop-off from 71.5% in 1990, when the corresponding numbers were 2.49 million workers out of 3.49 million.
