information call: Alexandra A. Radtke For Immediate Release NIPC Releases Digital Map of the Region Chicago, June 29,1999: The Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission (NIPC) today released the first Digital Map of the Region, a collection of maps and data in computer-readable form. The digital map allows the user to create a customized map of northeastern Illinois by choosing from among the information stored on the CD-ROM. It also makes available frequently-requested portions of NIPC's regional data records. "This unique product extends the Commission's commitment to provide data and technical tools in support of decision-making in the Chicago region," said President Herbert T. Schumann Jr. "The digital map responds to the growing number of businesses and local governments which need information about the region in electronic form." The CD-ROM contains maps and data on highways and transit lines, local government boundaries, open space and waterways, Census results, employment estimates, and land uses. Software for displaying the maps is also included. NIPC last prepared a regional base map in 1982. Thousands of copies have been distributed for use as a base on which to display information and planning ideas. Changes in computer technology since that time, particularly the development of geographic information systems (GIS), have made the digital map possible. The Digital Map of the Region is available for $45 ($36 for NIPC subscribers) through NIPC's Publications Department. The Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission is the comprehensive planning agency for the six-county metropolitan area. In addition to planning, the agency provides technical and research assistance and reviews state and federal grant requests for local governments. northeastern illinois planning commission 222 South Riverside Plaza * Suite 1800 * Chicago IL 60606 * (312) 454-0400 * FAX (312) 454-0411
