1990 Land Use Summary for Northeastern Illinois
| Summary Table Northeastern Illinois, consisting of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties, covers some 3,750 square miles. Despite rapid land conversion to urban uses during the last 25 years, agriculture in 1990 remained the largest user of land, covering 39% of the region. Agricultural plus vacant land (that is, land conceivably open to development) together accounted for 51% of the total region, down from 64% in 1970. Residential land use accounted for 26% of the total area, while land set aside for nonagricultural employment purposes made up 13% of the region’s land.
